I took these shots in Venice, Italy during August 1986. There are not very many pictures, and they are simple random tourist shots. However, I really like them. As a group, I consider some of these among my best work, simply because of the situation and the fact that I feel as though they captured the essence of my visit.
My old film camera gave these simple shots an almost artistic quality that I find lacking in my technological marvel of a digital camera. Not that I'm complaining, I can squeeze off more shots now without worrying about running out of film, and thus capture images that would be lost otherwise. I also don't have to wait until I get home to see if the shot came out and what it looks like. But film breathes a certain life into simple photographs that digital has a difficult time matching.
I am not the world's authority on Venice. However, having been there at two different times of year, I can attest that you get a completely different vibe between late June and mid-August. In June, everything seems much more vital and colorful and vital. In August, it is hot and dry and almost dusty. The people there in June seem very alive and energetic; those in August were hot and tired and not as happy. I realize these are gross generalizations, but the next time I go back, I hope to make it in June rather than August.
This page really is intended just as a repository for my high-resolution collection, but it is open to public view because maybe someone like you is curious what a visitor sees in Venice. If you like any of the pictures and want to use it for something, drop me a comment and let me know. I can't imagine it would be a problem with proper attribution or some arrangement.
